A well styled bookshelf can really bring the wow factor to a room. A great bookcase can provide the perfect place to showcase your collection of favorite books, art, and family pictures. There is really no wrong way to do it, it should be personal, but it can be tricky. For our upstairs media room built-ins, I reached out to the designers at Traditions in Charlotte, NC, to see how they would work their magic.
We were able to pull items from around the house, using an assortment of books (e.g. hardcovers with similar colored covers and large coffee table books), small works of art, and a couple of my favorite pictures. A few new items from Traditions, a variety of vases and pieces that added different textures and heights, really brought everything together.
Here are a few tips from designer Olivia Smith of Traditions on styling the perfect bookshelf:
Balance - Balance doesn't necessarily mean that things have to be symmetrical. We styled this bookcase with symmetrical and asymmetrical pieces by putting the heavy jars on different shelves but making sure it still all felt balanced.
Layer - Instead of lining items all up in a row, make sure to layer things in front of other things and stack items that may need some height.
Color - The color of your bookcase will dictate what accessories you should use. We made sure we chose accessories that would stand out against the blue. It is fun to mix colors like we did but we mainly kept a blue theme so that it didn't get too busy looking.
Edit - After you are all done styling your bookcase with all the items you want to use, make sure to step back and edit. Either move things around if you don't like where it is placed or if you feel like things are getting cluttered then take some items away.
