It started with a handmade gift for a friend and a desire to make someone feel loved, cherished, and known. This gift would plant a “seed” for artist Laura Deems, founder of Little Mustard Seed, who would share her talents to create a “treasure box” of places visited and homes cherished through her work, which celebrates the small details, colors, and charm of the structures that leave us with memorable impressions.
As a student studying textiles at the University of Georgia, Laura began creating prints of landmarks and historical buildings in her college town of Athens in a unique way bringing simple lines and forms to life on paper. She expanded her work to include custom home prints, taking a client’s photograph of their home and artfully translating it to a print that speaks to the core of what a home means to those that inhabit it. It sparks true emotion, joy, and a deep sense of belonging. Laura says, “The home ignites something inside of us. It gives us a sense of belonging, of becoming. It is a treasure box full of memories.”
I commissioned Laura to capture our own home, the house we built over three years ago. It is the place where our family of three became a family of four and continues to hold memories of our boys growing up and us growing old. It is a special thing to invite an artist into your story and to see how a small 8x10 piece can say so much.
One wouldn’t know it by chatting with Laura that she is only in the end of her senior year of college. A mature and confident voice comes across when speaking about her work and inspiration behind it. Laura’s future is undoubtedly bright, already making a name for herself in the art community with Little Mustard Seed. I am excited to see how her work continues to evolve, exploring new mediums and finding fresh inspiration. Notably her most recent work, “Bodies Emerging”, gives us some insight into her versatility as an artist and depth of creativity.
Laura Deems lives in Athens, Georgia and is studying Fabric Design at the University of Georgia. She is the creator and founder of the Little Mustard Seed. Laura enjoys days devoted to reading (Wendell Berry is a current favorite), watching the Cooking Channel (an Ina Garten fan, watching her cook is therapeutic), blaring rap music in the studio, and spending time with her people over popcorn.
