Jewelry designer Kristin Hayes is capturing the hearts of many with her ability to bring to life raw materials showcasing the beauty of texture, mixed metals, and form in each piece made. Her custom jewelry tells a story, elements symbolic of sentiments of the client, and often evokes an emotional connection for the owner to their modern heirloom.
I first stepped into Kristin's studio almost eight years ago as a newly engaged bride with hopes of creating something special for the girls who would stand by me on my wedding day. I was instantly drawn to Kristin, her kind smile was welcoming, it seemed as if we were old friends. She has a unique ability to help you learn more about yourself, likes and dislikes, and captures this feedback in her design. I recall Kristin's home studio serving as an inspiration in its own right, an endless mixture of precious stones, feminine and vintage materials, and finished pieces awaiting the right home. My own personal preferences, metal type, shape, and color, were perfectly translated into beautiful earrings for my girls.
Sitting with Kristin again in her studio years later, it feels familiar yet different in so many ways and I begin to learn how she has grown as a designer. As a mother, daughter, and friend, Kristin continues to be inspired as life happens, drawing from its beauty, losses, and experiences. Her work somehow embodies new and old, feminine and edgy, in a harmonious way. To be able to do this in a manner that is authentic and true to its form speaks to Kristin’s integrity as a designer. Her work continues to be highly sought out by brides and has been showcased in countless editorials. Whether it is bridal jewelry, part of a collection, or custom pieces, the jewelry feels fresh, modern, and original. As a designer, Kristin is constantly challenging herself, whether it be seeking out better materials or improving techniques, which undoubtedly contributes to her success as an artist. She operates at her own pace, not getting too caught up with trends, and letting new sparks of inspiration dictate her next move for her collections.
Back in Kristin's studio, now as a wife and mother of two young boys, we chat about my desire for a custom piece; a necklace to capture significant life events, my wedding date, the boys' birthdays, a Bible verse, and my new venture "Noteworthy". I am drawn to the mixed metals in a piece Kristin is wearing and quickly make note of my favorite components presented on the table in front of me. I know, from past experience, I am in good hands leaving the specifics of the design to the talented lady behind the jewelry.
