Charlotte-based interior designer and stylist Kate Eardly recently launched SG Interior Design to channel her lifelong passion for creating beautiful spaces into helping others truly love the place they call home. Sitting down with Kate to learn more about her as a designer, I quickly learn that her approach to design is very similar to her personality, fresh and inspiring.
Noteworthy: Tell us about your design background.
Kate: As far back as I can remember I have been arranging, rearranging, painting, or trying to decorate any space I could get my hands on. As I’ve gotten older I have fallen in love with creating spaces into something beautiful and unique. I’ve managed to learn through various avenues including classes, decorators, or simply reading since I can’t get enough of it.
Noteworthy: What inspired you to launch SG Interior Design?
Kate: Fear of regret. I didn’t want to look back in 10 years and have regrets about not following my passion. I’ve been doing this on the side for family and friends for years and finally, largely thanks to their encouragement, I wanted to put myself out there and see where this new venture would take me.
Noteworthy: What is your design philosophy?
Kate: Your style should reflect who you are. Whether you have more of a casual, traditional, or Boho-chic vibe, your house should be an extension of your personality. I love creating spaces inspired by people's vision and their attitude towards life.
Noteworthy: How would you describe your style?
Kate: My style definitely gravitates towards more transitional but with elements of modern. It’s also hard to choose just one style since I love mixing different aspects of each. Our family is very casual and our house reflects that. I recently saw a quote in Anna Spiro’s book Absolutely Beautiful Things, which said, “Buy once, buy well.” That’s such a true statement when decorating your house. Buy a piece that you know you will love and it will truly last.
Noteworthy: What top trends for the year are you currently loving?
Kate: I’m obsessed with gold hardware, it can create such a dramatic aspect without being too overdone. I’m also really into “less is more”. Life is so busy these days and it’s easy to have so much “stuff". If you can live in a space that isn’t cluttered it feels so much more peaceful.
Noteworthy: What is your favorite book/magazine on design?
Noteworthy: What inspires you?
Kate: My daughter. She was born with a tumor in her brain, neck, and face and the doctors never gave us much hope for her future due to the severity of the size and scope. Today, she is thriving in every way possible and lives life with such passion, joy, and tenacity. I strive to have those traits towards every aspect of my life as well.
